At a ceremony at the Brazilian foreign affairs ministry, President Lula da Silva announced a programme of massive investment in time for the 2014 World Cup, with the majority of the funds being used to upgrade the airports of the 12 host cities.

All of the works are forecast to be completed by April 2014, in advance of the World Cup. The host cities are , Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Cuiab, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Manaos, Porto Alegre, Salvador, Recife and Natal.

The announcement was made in conjunction with the official launch of the tender process for the country’s first bullet train scheme. Both of these infrastructure initiatives will dispel any doubts regarding Brazil’s readiness for the World Cup in 2014.

The 510km bullet train route will span the area between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo in a maximum journey time of just 95 minutes.
