Are you wondering which portion of the current marketplace is the most profitable area of the market to place your funds? If you are searching for the areas of market that holds the most promise for investors, you should certainly be investigating the potential of initial public offering / IPO opportunities.

As you likely already know, IPO stocks present a very unique opportunity for anyone who is investing into the open market. If you have the opportunity to invest in one of these stocks, you will be able to purchase the investment before the rest of the market has found the opportunity to do so. For this reason, you can be sure you are entering the stock at a very good time, for the company is about to experience a fairly large surge in the amount of a recognition it receives from the overall marketplace.

Even though the IPO stocks are generally a fairly decent investment when it comes to the timing of your purchase and understanding the IPO Process, you should still investigate a few factors to ensure you are entering a valuable investment. The basic premise of your research will be based on uncovering whether or not the stock is being sold for two high of a price and whether or not the stock will increase in value over time.

As you may already know, IPO investments are often the most difficult investments to assess. On many occasions there is a limited amount of information relative to the company’s operations, as well as a lack of data about how the public is going to respond to the company’s stock offerings.

This is why you should certainly access as much background research on the company as you possibly can. As you find out more information about the background of the company, you increase your ability to assess the overall value of the opportunity.

A good idea to base your research on is the fact that the company is releasing an IPO in order to raise more capital. Most of the time, companies utilize new sources of capital for expansion activities. There are some circumstances where a company will simply utilize the newly available funds for decreasing interest rate costs they must pay on the capital they borrow, but for the most part though, companies utilize the newly found capital they raise through IPOs for expansion activities. If you can predict that the company will be implementing substantial expansion activities after releasing their IPO, you will be able to easily assess whether or not the company is increasing its overall value as a result.

The fact that the company is attempting to raise capital for expansion is certainly a good sign for investors, but it should definitely not be your only source of information for the decision on whether or not you should buy the stock. You should keep in mind that the fact the company is raising capital to invest into its operations is only in a planned stage at the moment an initial public offering / IPO is released to the public.

The best way to estimate the overall results you will see with your investment is by making an attempt to predict where the capital the company is raising will be invested. If you can assess that the company will be investing large amounts of capital into extremely profitable portions of their operations, you can predict, with a fairly reasonable amount of accuracy, that the value of the company will increase over time.

If you are unclear on some different forms of investing you can look up IPO Process on our site, which goes into more detail.

The Fed Talks About Keeping Rates Low

Posted by: Lee Mel | Comments (0)

Currency speculators have seemed convinced over the last few months that at some point, the Fed is sure to hike interest rates once it is obvious the economy is in good shape. Based on yesterday’s Central Bank rate decision and subsequent announcement, it appears that ‘obvious’ is far from the thinking of the Board members.

It wasn’t unexpected that the conclusion of its meeting the Fed would hold onto a zero interest rate stance. But what was of more interest to analysts and investors was the comments on the current condition of the economy and potential future rate decisions.

The loud and clear message delivered by the Fed on Tuesday was that rates are not going up anytime soon. As the possibility diminished of a rate increase, the dollar’s momentum to rise further has waned a bit. The Euro passed through the $1.38 level early in the week’s currency trade for the first time since mid-February. After a dip down, one Euro currently fetches $1.3752.

The recent increase in Euro strength against the US dollar can also be down to recent comments from the European Union putting the pressure on the US to monitor credit swaps that have an impact on the rate of Euro against the Dollar.

The British Pound has also seen a strong spike against the dollar, though the Pound saw its low more recently at the start of March when it headed just below $1.50. The Pound currently trades at $1.5299 after reaching as high as $1.5383 in overnight European currency trade.

But as we all know, current sentiment only lasts until it doesn’t. If a number of data releases begin to clearly show that the economy is in better shape, it would not take long for the Fed to start rate hikes. Higher yields will then lead to a more valued currency.

However, it seems that the Fed is currently more concerned with preserving current economic conditions in housing, credit, and other markets. With other housing and loan programs near expiry, the Federal Reserve wants to ensure borrowers find incetives in loan rates and then businesses will be more likely to expand. Unemployment seems to be heading lower based on recent jobless claims and data. Thus, a low interest policy could remain in effect for months.

This the second part of the series on the discussion of principles of investment in the stock market. This is the continuation of a four part series. We previously discussed the first principle. This involves realizing that the stock market is just another investment vehicle. You must realize that there are other vehicles of investments before you decide to invest in the stock market. In this article the next two principles will be discussed. Please visit my blog if you want to view the entire article.

2.) Investing in the stock market is a roller coaster ride – The advantage in the stock market is that when it goes up, big profits are often made. But when it drops fast, big losses are made also.

The general strategy is to sell when the market is up and to buy when the market goes down. About two years ago when I started investing, the Philippine Stock exchange index was only about 2000 + points. I’ve seen it go up to 2500 points and slide back to the 2000 level in the middle of 2006. It slowly and steadily climbed up to the 3200 level in the 1st quarter of 2007 and dropped in a very short period of time during the last days of the 1st quarter of 2007. It climbed steadily to a high of 3700+ points in July 2007 but slid back below 3000 points a month after. By October 2007 it climbed steadily to its highest at 3800+ points. A month after it dropped to 3600+ points.

The point here is that it is really a roller coaster ride. Profits and losses are made during those up and down moments of the market.

3.) You should determine what type of investor you are – Are you a long term investor or a short term investor? This is a very important question that each serious new investor should consider. This affects whether you should buy or sell a certain stock.

If you are a long term investor, meaning that you hold your stocks for 5 to 10 years or more it means that you believe in the company that you are investing in and that you have extra money for other things because you can afford to put in your money for a long period of time.

One of the main benefits of being long term investors is that you do not have to worry about monitoring the day to day technical analysis. There is no problem if the stock is held for a long period of time since what is considered is the strong fundamentals of the company. On the other hand, short term investor, who decide to cash in within a months time to 6 months time, will have to monitor the day to day market activities to ensure that they are making a profit.

Short term investors have also to consider if they can afford to put in their money for a long period of time however the time element is not as long as that of the long term investor. This is so because during the short period wherein you buy and sell stocks, you might incur losses during this time so you may decide to wait longer a little bit more.

Most of the stocks I hold are considered as medium and long term investments. This is because when I started out I determined to be more of a long term investor. There are stocks that I hold that I consider as short term investments. However majority of the stocks that I hold are considered as medium to long term investments.

Investing in commodities may be something that investors thought of boring and dull only a few decades back but not anymore now. If you are interested in investing in companies that are involved in the production, transformation and distribution of commodities, than one of the best ways to do so is through investing in the Master Limited Partnership (MLP).

The shares that an MLP issues are called Units and the investors who own them are known as Unit Holders. MLPs are public entities that trade on public exchanges. An MLP issues shares that trade on an exchange just like a company stocks that trades on an exchange. You can invest in an MLP by buying its shares on an exchange.

Right now there are not many MLPs in the market. You will only find 3-4 dozen MLPs listed in the different stock exchanges. When you invest in an MLP, you are essentially investing in public partnership. There are tax advantages to investing in MLP. Unlike regular corporations, an MLP is only taxed once. Now most of the MLPs trade on the New York Stock Exchange. A few MLPs also trade on the NASDAQ and the AMEX. Tax exemption on MLPs gives them certain benefits that other companies in the same industry lack. There is a tax exemption on MLPs. You must be curious how this tax advantage works out. Because of

Congressional Legislation, any MLP that derives 90% or more of its income from the production, distribution and transformation of commodities qualifies for this tax exempt scheme.

Tax exemption means that MLP have to generate a lower rate of return as compared to other companies competing with it in the same sector. Since an MLP has got the tax exempt status it will only have to generate only $1.54 for each dollar that you invest in it. Suppose you invest $1 in the stocks of a regular corporation and you are in the 35% tax bracket. Corporate tax is 30% of its before tax income. This means that for each dollar that you invest you need to get at least $1/ (1-0.35) =$1.54 just in order to breakeven. So the corporation will have to generate $1.54/ (1-0.3) =$2.2 for each dollar that you invest in order to return you $1 after tax profit.

The role of a GP is very important in an MLP. You as an investor in the assets of MLP might have a very limited role or say in its running. You can think of yourself as a sleeping partner in the MLP. In most cases, the majority of these GPs in MLPs are other corporate entities setup with the specific purpose of running an MLP. This tax advantage gives an MLP competitive advantage as compared to other corporations when competing for assets. This means a huge advantage for an MLP. Now an MLP is run by a General Partner (GP). But you don’t have to worry much about the GP. Most GPs do a good job of running the MLP as it is in their financial interests. GPs know that if they don’t make sound management and investment decisions, most of the investors my eventually deicide to divest themselves from the units of the MLP. Now you must know as a limited partner in an MLP, you have limited voting rights. This means when you invest in an MLP, you are giving away the keys of ownership to the GP. This means you are out of the decision making in an MLP.

Investing in MLP units can give you quarterly cash flows as well as appreciation of the unit price. An MLP is obligated to distribute all available cash back to its unit holders on a quarterly basis, so you will be getting a quarterly income from your units. Secondly as the MLP expands and grows overtime, its units may give you capital gain as well.

The story was once told by a proud father of his young boy who previously had no business sense or acumen what so ever. It seems that this young lad had parlayed a meager sum of his money and cash into a rather large sum of funds simply by changing his wealth on a regular basis from one currency to another. As the young fellow instructed his father. Anyone can do it. You simply read the newspaper for current currency rates. It does not cost anything. Then I went to the bank and purchased traveler’s checks , which to his good fortune his bank included in his service fee package. If the paper told me that dollars went up , I cashed in my US dollar denominated Amex travelers checks. If British pound sterling was low , I would use those funds to buy units in that currency. Add in Japanese Yen and E.U. European money into the mix , and all in all you have a simple explanation of forex , foreign currency trading. Interestingly the young man was able to place down a substantial down payment for a substantial new home in Coquitlam Canada.

What is the simple basis of forex currency trading. Its that currencies reflect the health of the economies of their respective countries or regions. If a country is stable economically as well as politically and yet it currency seems to be undervalued in terms of comparison to other major indexes of both the countries it trades its products or services with , or if overall that countries issued standards of conversions seems way out of whack – either too high or too low – then it may well be the time and opportunity of the active financial currency trader to either be in ( that is to acquire) or redeem or even relinquish his or her’s monetary holdings in that fund.

Generally a smart forex trader will use both forms of analysis when operating in the currency markets. Interestingly the world renowned British financial magazine “The Economist” uses a scale of McDonald’s hamburgers and their comparative pricing around the world , back to a standard reference point as to the relative value of foreign currencies vis- a-vis each other. The method has been more than criticized in the staid world of international finance yet the Economist’s ledger seems to be remarkably accurate in its statical record and history.

Not to get caught up for rank forex foreign currency novice and beginner traders who think that but of course markets – be they of retail goods, consumables , investments , stocks , bonds and in this case foreign denominated currency holdings are driven by strict facts and analysis of these facts think again. Most markets are driven by greed and human emotion and emotions. Put panic , and investors getting carried away with their limited skills and perceptions as well as the human foible of overextending themselves financially and you have a recipe for disaster for some , and huge profits to made on forex trading conversions for others. The refrain for some of “how much lower can this currency go” – be it Mexican Pesos , US dollars or others – is that often the bottom has not been reached yet.

Forex trading is not for everyone , nor the weak of heart. Speak to knowledgeable investors who have been in a varied grocery basket and index of differing forms of investments and financial products. Experience tops all . Benefit from both their good and bad insights. Forex can be seen as a gold mine or it can be seen as gambling. If there are several rules to follow they are , do your homework , check your facts , limit your exposure to any one currency holding and lastly don’t “invest” what you cannot afford to “lose
